Suzhou
Located in the south
of Jiangsu Province, in the middle of the Yangtze Delta; in the lower
reaches of the Yangtze River and on the shores of Taihu Lake, bordering on
Shanghai in the east, Zhejiang Province in the south , Taihu Lake in the
west and the Yangtze River in the north, the city is known as "Gusu city",
having the fame of "Oriental Venice",
Suzhou was set up in BC 514; being a city with history of more than 2500
years, it was named Suzhou in A.D.581, Sui dynasty.
Tiger Hill
Located in northwest
Suzhou, the Tiger Hill is a major tourist attraction in the
city. At Hanshan Temple, people can go to the Tiger Hill by
small dragon boat.
Hanshan Temple
Located in Fengqiao Town
3.5 kilometers west of Suzhou City, Hanshan Temple was built
during the Liang period (502-520) of the Southern Dynasties.
The temple was once under the direction of eminent monks
Hanshan and Shide of the Tang Dynasty, hence its
name.
Fisherman Garden
The Fisherman Garden was
rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. The tiny garden is a typical
building complex of ancient China. All structures here were
built with wood and all doors and window frames were decorated
with carvings.
Zhuozheng (Humble
Administrator's) Garden
Built in 1513 in the Ming
Dynasty, Zhuozheng Garden, or the Humble Administrator's
Garden, is the largest garden in the city. The garden covers
an area of 4.8 hectares, three fourths of which are on
water.
Suzhou Embroidery
Suzhou embroidery is one of
the four famous types of embroidery in China, others being the
xiang embroidery in Hunan, the shu embroidery in Sichuan, and
the yue embroidery in Guangdong
Silk Weaving
It is one of the
traditional Chinese craftsmanship, a type of weaving done by
the tapestry method with fine silk and golden thread. Silk
woven articles were tributes to the royal court in the Qing
Dynasty.
Zhouzhuang
Located 30 kilometers
southeast of downtown Suzou, Zhouzhuang Town was first a
village established in 1086 in the Northern Song
Dynasty.
An ancient town on water,
Zhouzhuang is charming for beautiful surroundings and simple,
ancient buildings, crisscrossing rivers and lakes. Over half
of the buildings in the town were constructed in the Ming and
Qing dynasties.
Another feature of
Zhouzhuang is small bridges. There are 10 ancient bridges in
the town.
Tongli Town
Located 20 kilometers
southeast of downtown Suzhou, Tongli Town on water remains the
original architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
In the 0.67-square-kilomerter town, there are 15 crisscrossing
rivers, on which 20 bridges span. The streets in Tongli are
narrow, simple but elegant. Teahouses, shops and residential
houses line one after another. |
